steel in the temper-rolled condition.
Austenitic stainless steels with high
work hardening rates are employed
because of their extremely high
strength and corresponding fatigue and
spring properties.

Type 301 is the most commonly specified stainless steel for MLS gaskets. It is available in five tempers (specified as annealed through full-hard) with corresponding strength levels ranging from 40-185 ksi. Type 201 can often be substituted for higher-nickel alloys in MLS applications. It behaves similarly to Type 301, and can be temper rolled to strengths of 200 ksi or more.
Other grades, such as 304, 316, 321, 409, and 430 are used for special-purpose gaskets. |
