Materials used in desalination must
resist environments that include
brackish water or seawater, potable
water and brine discharge. The ATI
Allegheny Ludlum products most
commonly used in desalination are
316L, AL 2205™, AL-6XN®, AL 4565™, AL
29-4C®, and SEA-CURE®. In seawater
reverse osmosis plants and portable
units, materials such as AL-
6XN® stainless steel have been used
for pipes, connectors, valves,
nozzles, and fittings. For multi-stage
flash plants and multi-effect
distillation plants, superferritic and
duplex stainless steels have found use
in heat recovery shells, support
plates, heat exchanger tube bundles
and plates, steam ejectors and ejector
tubing, and de-mister supports. AL 29-
4C®, SEA-CURE®, and AL 4565™ alloys
are cost-effective alternatives to
titanium in MSF condensers. AL 2003™
lean duplex alloy should be considered
for use in several of these
applications as a cost-effective
replacement for Type 316L or AL 2205™
stainless steels.
