Water, Seawater, Desalination & Marine - Seawater / Marine Applications

Seawater and marine environments can be highly corrosive to standard stainless steels such as Type 304. Specialized alloys containing elevated levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen have been developed to withstand these environments. In general, materials having higher concentrations of these elements will have greater resistance to corrosion by seawater.

Stainless Steel Corrosion resistance and strength are important considerations in the selection of stainless steels for marine applications. While Type 316 and AL 2003™ lean duplex stainless steel offer improved corrosion resistance compared to Type 304, alloys high in molybdenum, such as AL 29-4C®, ATI 904L™, ATI 2205™ duplex, ATI 255™ duplex, AL-6XN® and ATI 4565™, will perform even better. These alloys are commonly used in marine and offshore structures and in military and commercial ships. 316 / 316L
